An Alleged Xbox Elite Series 3 Prototype Reportedly Lands in a Redditor’s Hands... Accidentally

Xbox may have accidentally given one customer an early look at its next premium controller. A purported Xbox Elite Series 3 prototype has reportedly surfaced through an online resale listing. The buyer apparently expected an Elite Series 2. Instead, the controller reportedly refuses to connect normally, raising questions about whether this is genuine development hardware.

The mysterious controller refuses to work

The alleged Xbox Elite Series 3 Prototype first surfaced on Reddit after user u/ssuberlex (post now deleted) asked whether anyone had seen the unannounced controller before (via X/@TomWarren). Other users quickly suspected the device was an Elite Series 3 development unit. One user even suggested that could require a registered developer account before working properly.

The buyer later said the controller would not pair with an Xbox or connect through a cable. Only a blinking red light reportedly appeared during connection attempts. That behavior certainly makes the prototype theory more interesting. However, there is still no official confirmation from Microsoft.

Rumors and leaks regarding XBOX Elite Series 3 aren’t new

This isn’t the first time Microsoft’s next Elite controller has appeared in the wild. Earlier reports claimed the controller could feature Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, trigger locks, paddles, and an interchangeable D-pad. Two scroll wheels and a new pairing button have also been rumored.

The reported button could supposedly switch between local and cloud modes. That feature may help reduce latency when using Xbox cloud gaming. Microsoft has yet to announce the Elite Series 3. However, another physical prototype appearing outside Microsoft’s walls makes an official reveal seem increasingly likely.

Gamescom 2026 is coming later this month, which makes the timing of the leak especially interesting. Whether Microsoft has anything planned for the event remains unclear.
