Anthropic Extends Claude Fable 5 Promotion as GPT-5.6 Release Nears

Anthropic has extended promotional access to Claude Fable 5 after restoring the model earlier this month following a temporary suspension linked to export restrictions.

Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 had a rocky launch after Anthropic suspended access to both models for all users following a government order. After receiving approval from the US government, Anthropic restored Claude Fable 5 access on July 1.

Claude Fable 5 returned through Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.

Anthropic made the model available to Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise users. The company initially offered Fable 5 through a limited-time promotion that was set to end on July 7.

Promotional access now runs until July 12

Anthropic has now extended the Claude Fable 5 promotion until July 12, 2026, at 11:59:59 PM PT.

Eligible users can use Claude Fable 5 for up to 50% of their weekly subscription limits at no extra cost. After they reach that limit, they can continue using Fable 5 with usage credits or switch to another Claude model.

OpenAI competition adds pressure

The timing also comes as OpenAI reportedly prepares a wider GPT-5.6 release.

Axios reported that the US Department of Commerce approved OpenAI for a broader GPT-5.6 launch after additional testing and meetings with officials. OpenAI is expected to release GPT-5.6 widely this week.

That puts more pressure on Anthropic to keep Claude Fable 5 visible during a competitive week for major AI model releases.

Anthropic’s extended promotion appears aimed at keeping developer attention on Claude Fable 5 while OpenAI prepares its next major model rollout.

The move also helps Anthropic recover momentum after the earlier access suspension. For users on eligible plans, the promotion gives Fable 5 a longer window to prove itself before regular usage limits and credits become the main way to access the model.
