Anthropic Merges Claude Chat and Cowork into One Unified Experience
Anthropic is now making a major change to Claude by merging Claude Cowork and regular chat into a single experience. Now, users no longer have to decide whether a task belongs in Claude Chat or Cowork. They can simply describe what they want, and Claude can decide which capabilities are needed to complete the work. Just to remind you, last month, the company also unified Claude memory to work across Cowork and your chat.
Claude Cowork and Chat are now one
Cowork was originally positioned as the place for larger jobs that required Claude to work through files, connected services and multi-step tasks. Regular Claude chat was mainly used for questions and conversations. Anthropic says users found the split frustrating because they had to decide where a task belonged, while work started in one place did not always carry into the other.
With the new setup, that distinction is being removed. A conversation can now handle everything from a quick question to a larger research project, report, spreadsheet or presentation. Claude can continue working on more involved tasks even after the user closes their laptop, with the results waiting in the conversation when they return.
Anthropic is also launching Claude Docs and Claude Slides as beta features for paid plans. Users can ask Claude to create a document and work on it together, or have Claude draft a presentation. The resulting files can be edited, presented directly from Claude or downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF files.
Claude Design is moving into conversations too
Claude Design is also being integrated directly into conversations instead of requiring users to treat it as a separate destination. Anthropic says anything created with Claude Design, Slides or Docs can live behind a single shareable link, which can also be opened from a phone.
The company is also keeping users in control of how Claude operates. By default, Claude asks before taking an action, while users can choose to let it continue working and only check in when something needs closer attention.
The unified Claude experience is rolling out to Pro and Max subscribers across web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks. There is nothing users need to enable. Team and Free plans will follow, while Enterprise administrators will receive at least 30 days’ notice before the change reaches their organizations.
