Anthropic has confirmed that the U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, clearing the way for limited access to return.

The company said it received official notice about the change and now plans to begin restoring access to Claude Fable 5 today. Claude Mythos 5 will remain available only to select companies for now.

Claude Fable 5 access is returning

The launch of Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 faced major disruption after the models reportedly raised security concerns soon after release.

The models drew attention because of their advanced capabilities, including reports that they identified vulnerabilities in NSA-linked systems. That incident reportedly played a role in the government restrictions that followed.

Anthropic has spent the period since then working to restore access under government review. The company previously managed to bring back Claude Mythos 5 for approved use cases after receiving U.S. government approval.

Now, Claude Fable 5 appears to be the next model returning to users.

Mythos 5 will stay limited

While the Commerce Department has lifted export controls on both models, Anthropic is not fully reopening access to Claude Mythos 5.

The company said Mythos 5 will remain limited to select companies. This suggests Anthropic and U.S. officials may still treat the model as more sensitive than Fable 5.

Anthropic has not said which companies will keep access, how approvals will work, or whether more customers can apply later.

Global availability remains unclear

It remains unclear whether Claude Fable 5 will return for all users globally. Availability outside the United States has not been confirmed.

Some users have also speculated that access to the new models could require government ID verification, especially if Anthropic applies stricter compliance checks for advanced models.

Anthropic continues expanding elsewhere

The update comes as Anthropic continues to expand Claude across major enterprise platforms.

Claude models are now available in Microsoft Foundry on Azure, giving more businesses access to Anthropic’s AI models through Microsoft’s cloud ecosystem.

Anthropic has also just released Claude Sonnet 5, the newest model in its Sonnet lineup. The company says Sonnet 5 improves reasoning, coding, agentic tasks, tool use, and general knowledge work compared with Claude Sonnet 4.6.

For now, Anthropic users can expect Fable 5 access to start coming back first, while Mythos 5 remains under tighter limits.
