Apple Plans iPhone-to-Windows Clipboard Sync in the EU

Apple is developing iPhone-to-Windows clipboard sync, allowing users to copy supported content on an iPhone and paste it directly on a Windows 11 PC.

The capability follows an interoperability request from Microsoft under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, according to Windows Central.

Microsoft wants clipboard syncing to run in the background

Microsoft described cross-device copy and paste as a basic productivity feature that users expect across their primary devices.

The proposed system would run as a lightweight background capability between a paired iPhone and Windows PC. Users would not need to open an app in the foreground or manually start each transfer.

Apple must first address an iOS limitation. Apps can currently access clipboard data only while running in the foreground, which prevents Microsoft from offering continuous clipboard synchronization.

Apple is creating a new clipboard framework

Apple confirmed on June 26 that it plans to develop a framework for sharing clipboard items with paired accessories.

The system would work similarly to the Accessory Notifications and Accessory Live Activities frameworks introduced with iOS 26.5. An extension could receive a notification when someone copies content and then send that item to the paired Windows PC.

Apple plans to use its Accessory Transport Extension framework and supported connection methods to handle transfers.

Both devices will require authorization

The feature will likely rely on Apple’s AccessorySetupKit for pairing and authorization.

Both the iPhone and Windows PC would need to approve the connection. This approach should stop clipboard content from reaching unknown or unauthorized devices automatically.

A release may not arrive until late 2027

Apple called the project a significant engineering effort and expects development to continue until fall 2027.

Beta testing would begin afterward, making a public release unlikely before late 2027. Apple may also restrict the initial rollout to users in the European Union.

The company has not confirmed whether it will eventually offer iPhone-to-Windows clipboard syncing worldwide.
