As reported by the BBC, the Microsoft co-founder said that he will donate over the next 20 years will be spent on improving health and education across the continent. The announcement came during a speech in Addis Ababa.
“I recently made a commitment that my wealth will be given away over the next 20 years,” Gates said at the African Union headquarters. “The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa.”
Bill Gates pledges to donate 99% of his expected $200 billion net worth by 2045
Bill Gates, who expects his net worth to hit $200 billion, has pledged to donate 99% of it by 2045 in Africa. His foundation plans to close its doors by then, too.
With the pledged amount, Gates wants to stop preventable deaths, fight infectious diseases, and lift communities out of poverty. He further said that helping mothers stay healthy and ensuring children get proper nutrition, especially in the first few years, is quite important.

AI for good, from the ground up
While in Ethiopia, Gates also urged young African innovators to think about how artificial intelligence could reshape healthcare, just like mobile banking once transformed finance across the continent.
“Africa largely skipped traditional banking,” he said. “Now you have a chance… to think about how AI is built into that.” He pointed to Rwanda as a strong example, already using AI-powered ultrasounds to catch high-risk pregnancies early.
