By now you already know blocking ads on YouTube has become harder but ads are not the only annoying thing and with BlockTube, you can take greater control of the content you watch.
What does the BlockTube extension do?
BlockTube is a free extension available for Firefox desktop and Android. It helps you curate the kind of YouTube content you’d like to see on your timeline. Some of the benefits you get include:
- Enables you to block unwanted content, especially from channels you’re not interested in but regularly show up on your timeline
- Allows you to create a curated timeline by blocking distracting content so that you can focus on your tasks and enhance productivity
- Enables you to filter content by blocking using keywords, usernames and other filters
- Removes the annoying Video paused, continue watching? popup so that you can continue watching content uninterrupted
How do I install BlockTube on Firefox?
- Launch your Firefox browser and go to the Firefox Browser add-ons website.
- Search for BlockTube, select it from the search results.
- Next, click Add to Firefox. The extension is free so you won’t have to purchase anything.
- The extension will be downloaded and installed. Click Add to allow the extension to access browser tabs, and browser activity during navigation.
- You might also get a prompt to run the extension in private windows. To enable it, place a checkmark and click Okay.
Additional tips for using BlockTube on Firefox
- YouTube has a lot of clickbait content and other annoying videos so start by identifying common clickbait keywords, list them then add them to your blocklist. You can start with broader terms to avoid limiting some otherwise great content then narrow down to specifics.
- Instead of blocking an entire channel, focus on specific keyword so you don’t miss out on creators who occasionally put out content you may be interested in.
- Review your blocklist regularly to see if there’s an update in the content and whether you’d like to lift the restriction.
- For creators whose content is important to you, ensure you whitelist them so that they don’t fall into the broader block list.
Unfortunately, most users cry foul over YouTube slowing down Firefox or sometimes YouTube not working on Firefox. Luckily, BlockTube is also available on Chrome.
Aside from blocking unwanted content, audiophiles can enjoy uninterrupted music sessions on YouTube Music on their desktops using one of our tricks.
