After that date, new games will launch through the PlayStation Store and digital retail formats only. Fans are upset by this decision, with some signing petitions and canceling PlayStation Plus subscriptions in protest.

XBOX has already sold digital-only hardware, including the XBOX Series S and the all-digital XBOX Series X model. Microsoft is also reportedly testing a disc-to-digital feature that would let some XBOX One and XBOX Series X discs create digital entitlements tied to a Microsoft account.
Reports also claim Microsoft has not fully finalized whether Project Helix, its next-generation XBOX console, will include a built-in disc drive. Experts speculate Microsoft appears to be leaning away from discs, but XBOX has not confirmed that plan.
That makes the cancelled advert look less like a simple marketing decision and more like a sign of internal uncertainty.
XBOX may have pulled the campaign because it no longer matched the company’s long-term direction. The advert celebrated choice, while the wider industry now seems ready to reduce that choice.
