Following improvements to Audio ducking, Google is working to reduce echo during video calls in Chrome by using System AEC (Audio Echo Cancellation) on Windows 11 24H2. This feature is currently being tested in Chrome Canary.

If you’ve ever been on a call and heard your own voice echoing back, you know how frustrating it can be. This happens when sound from your speakers gets picked up by your microphone. System AEC fixes this by blocking that audio leak, ensuring your calls are echo-free.

Google is adding a new feature flag called “Enforce System Echo Cancellation” to Chrome. When enabled, it tells Windows 11 to use its built-in echo cancellation technology. The feature only works on Windows 11 version 24H2 (build 26100) or later. If you’re on an older version, you’ll need to upgrade to use it.

System AEC stops audio from other apps (like music or videos) from leaking into your microphone during calls. On Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft’s” Voice Clarity” feature works automatically with System AEC, making your voice sound even better.

A part of a commit message reveals “it is now possible to enable a flag and thereby activate a
system AEC on Windows 24H2 and above. “

How to enable System AEC in Chrome on Windows 11

The feature is currently being tested in Chrome Canary, Google’s experimental browser. You can enable it by turning on the Enforce system Echo Cancellation flag in chrome://flags.

“Enforce System Echo Cancellation” flag description states “
Enables usage of system AEC on Windows and Mac. The goal is to ensure that audio which is played out from from external (non-Chrome) applications does not leak into microphone signals and thereby causing echo. On Windows, Windows 11 24H2 (build 26100) and above is required. – Mac, Windows”

Google has improved multi-monitor support in Chrome with Windows 11 24H2. The company is running a metric to determine Windows 10 users’ eligibility for upgrading to Windows 11.

Additionally, Chrome is adding a tree view for bookmarks in the side panel and will soon allow users to disable all extensions for specific sites.
