Claude’s New Cowork Feature Turns AI Into a True Work Partner
Currently available as a research preview for Claude Max subscribers on macOS
When Anthropic launched Claude Code, the expectation was simple: developers would use it for coding tasks. Well, that didn’t quite happen. Users instead quickly began pushing Claude far beyond code, using it for writing, organizing, planning, and just about everything else. That unexpected shift has now led to something new.
Anthropic has introduced Cowork, a new way to work with Claude that feels less like chatting with an AI and more like collaborating with a real teammate. Cowork is currently available as a research preview for Claude Max subscribers on macOS.
Unlike a regular conversation, Cowork gives Claude access to a folder on your computer. Once permission is granted, Claude can read, edit, create, and organize files inside that space. That means it can sort messy downloads, rename files, build spreadsheets from screenshots, or draft documents using scattered notes. The key difference here is agency. Claude doesn’t just respond. It plans, executes, and keeps you updated as it works.
The experience will feel familiar to anyone who has used Claude Code. Cowork runs on the same underlying system, but it’s designed for everyday tasks instead of programming. Anthropic is also expanding Cowork’s abilities with built-in skills for documents and presentations, along with support for existing connectors. Pair it with Claude in Chrome, and browser-based tasks are also possible.
Control remains central to the experience. Users decide which folders Claude can access, and the AI asks before taking major actions. Still, Anthropic warns that Cowork can perform destructive actions if instructed, so clear guidance is essential.
This is only the beginning. Cowork is launching early so Anthropic can learn how people actually use it. Windows support and cross-device sync are already on the roadmap.
