Copilot Agent Mode is now generally available in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Agent Mode becomes the default experience for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Premium users
Microsoft has started rolling out Agent Mode as a default experience in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. To catch you up, the company first announced the feature last year. Now it’s generally available. With Agent Mode now live, Copilot will help you with multi-step, app-native actions directly in your documents, worksheets, and presentations, all from the sidebar.
Copilot now does the work inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from the sidebar
Microsoft has also highlighted what makes Agent Mode useful in day-to-day work. The company adds that Copilot now goes beyond suggestions to real execution (via The Verge). Rather than just guiding you, Copilot now handles tasks like formatting documents, restructuring content, creating visuals, and converting data directly inside apps.
The company isn’t compromising on the control part, either. You can review every change, keep what works, and adjust outputs to match your preferred structure, style, and branding. With Work IQ in place, Copilot can understand your files, workflows, and intent faster, which leads to better quality results across documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The idea is simple; the more context AI has, the less back-and-forth you need.
Notably, different AI models power different tasks behind the scenes, allowing Copilot to pick what works best depending on the job. Finally, consistency across apps plays a big role. Whether you’re in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, the Agent Mode is designed to feel familiar, while still adapting to what makes each app unique.
Giving a few examples, Microsoft notes that with Copilot in the sidebar, your Word document can “go from a blank page to a polished document faster, drafting, rewriting, restructuring, and applying the right tone for your audience.” Similarly, in Excel, Copilot helps you explore data, build and explain analysis, and make changes directly in your workbook. Meanwhile, in PowerPoint, Copilot helps you create presentations with ease, while maintaining your company’s template.
Availability
All the aforementioned features are now generally available for users with Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium subscriptions. Moreover, the company also confirms that the new features are also available on Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans.
