Edge to Block Screenshots of Protected PDFs in OneDrive & SharePoint Soon, Microsoft Confirms

Starting next month, Microsoft Edge users won’t be able to take screenshots of certain protected PDF files opened from OneDrive and SharePoint in the browser. The upcoming change extends Microsoft Purview protection to the web PDF viewer, closing a gap that previously allowed screenshots in some cases.

Protected PDFs will automatically block screenshots

In an updated Admin Center Message ID MC1409303, Microsoft has confirmed that the feature applies to PDFs protected with Microsoft Purview Information Protection sensitivity labels that include No Copy (EXTRACT) Permission. Once the rollout begins, Edge will automatically block screen captures whenever one of these protected documents is opened in the web viewer.

Microsoft says organizations don’t need to enable a new setting. If the required sensitivity label is already in use, screenshot blocking will simply start working once the update reaches users. Regular PDFs and labels without copy restrictions won’t be affected.

Edge is the only supported browser for now

Speaking of browser support, Microsoft says the protection will only work in Microsoft Edge at launch. Other desktop browsers and mobile web experiences won’t enforce the same screenshot restrictions during general availability.

That’s why, Microsoft recommends organizations use Conditional Access or browser management policies to direct users to Edge when opening protected PDF files. The company also suggests reviewing existing sensitivity labels, updating internal documentation, and letting employees know screenshots may stop working for certain documents after the update.

Microsoft plans to start rolling out the feature to Targeted Release customers in early August 2026, with worldwide availability starting in mid-August and expected to finish by late August.
