If your laptop has an Elan mousepad inside and you’re using Windows 8.1, then you might be just as unlucky as one user from the Microsoft community support forums. Here’s what he has been saying:
elan mousepad windows 8.1

a couple of months ago my mouse pad stopped working (just the side scrolling and swiping) and i found that if i go to mouse properties and set all the options to default, it’d fix it, but every other day it’d go back to not working again. i’m finding that fixing it every other day is very tedious so i’m wondering if there’s a permanent solution? i have windows 8.1 btw

Elan touchpads have problems in Windows 8.1

I’ve searched for a sure fix for this problem, but haven’t managed to find a solution that I could recommend to those who seem to be affected by this. So, what I’d suggest is the following – go ahead and open your Device Manager, then go to the listed devices and find the Elan one. Then, you will need to uninstall its drivers and restart the computer, then go there again and scan for eventual changes. Thus, your system will get the latest drivers and this might solve it.

Since this is a hardware we’re talking about, there might be situations where it might have gotten moisture or dust there, I know that it happened to me. Sadly, in this situation, you will have to take it to a repair shop and have it replaced or cleaned. You can also try and perform the troubleshooter on it, just in case it might be a software corruption or any other issue of that sorts. In cause you happen to know a working fix, do let us know by leaving your comment below.
