Epic Games Store Is Getting Official Linux Support “Soon”

Could Linux users finally stop relying on third-party launchers for Epic games? The answer is most possibly be yes. That’s because an Epic Games Store representative has said that official Linux support is coming “soon.” As off now, the company has not revealed a launch date, but the confirmation marks a major change for a storefront that has long skipped Linux.

Epic says Linux support needs more than a simple port

Folks over at SteamDeckHQ first spotted the confirmation, which reportedly came during an Epic Games Store AMA on the company’s community Discord (via VideoCardz). Epic staff member @onepercentnachos said Linux support is planned, but it will not arrive with the next preview release.

More importantly, the representative suggested the work involves more than simply creating a Linux version. That could point toward broader platform integration rather than a basic launcher port. Epic’s current storefront officially supports PC, Mac, and Android. The company also supports iPhone and iPad in the European Union, but Linux is absent from its official platform list.

Steam Deck could be one of the biggest beneficiaries

An official Epic Games Store client could make Steam Deck and Linux gaming considerably simpler. Users could potentially access their Epic libraries, claim free games, and manage downloads without relying on community-built launchers.

That does not automatically mean Fortnite will work on Linux. Epic previously maintained concerns around Linux anti-cheat, while individual games still need compatible security configurations.

All that said, Epic has not announced supported distributions, SteamOS compatibility, or a release window. The company’s use of “soon” leaves plenty unanswered.
