How to fix ERROR_DISK_REPAIR_REDIRECTED

The ERROR_DISK_REPAIR_REDIRECTED (error code 792 – 0x318) indicates that Windows has redirected disk repair operations, usually due to a file system issue or bad sectors on the disk. This can lead to performance problems, system crashes, or data loss if left unresolved.

How do I fix ERROR_DISK_REPAIR_REDIRECTED?

1. Run CHKDSK (Check Disk) to Repair Errors

  1. Press Win + S, type cmd, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter (Replace C: with the drive letter experiencing the issue): chkdsk /f /r C:
  3. If prompted, type Y and press Enter to schedule a scan at the next restart.
  4. Restart your computer and let CHKDSK repair disk errors.

2. Use the Windows Error Checking Tool

  1. Open File Explorer (Win + E) and right-click on the affected drive and select Properties.
  2. Then, go to the Tools tab, and under Error Checking, click Check and then Scan drive.
  3. If errors are found, follow the on-screen instructions to repair them.

3. Run the System File Checker (SFC) and DISM Commands

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator, as indicated in the first solution.
  2. Type and run the following command: sfc /scannow
  3. Once done, run these DISM commands one by one:
    • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Restart your PC and check if the error persists

4. Check SMART status of the drive

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter: wmic diskdrive get status
  3. If you see Caution or Bad, your disk may be failing and should be replaced.

Alternatively, use third-party software like CrystalDiskInfo, HD Tune, or other hardware diagnostic tools to check drive health.

5. Free up disk space and defragment the drive (for HDD)

  1. Open File Explorer (Win + E), right-click on the affected drive, and select Properties.
  2. Click Disk Cleanup, select unnecessary files, and click OK.
  3. Open Defragment and Optimize Drives (Win + S, type Defragment).
  4. Select your drive and click Optimize.

Only HDDs should be defragmented, SSDs do not need this step.

6. Update or Reinstall Disk Drivers

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Disk drives, right-click your drive, and select Update driver.
  3. If the issue persists, right-click the drive again, choose Uninstall device, and restart your PC to let Windows reinstall the driver.

We have a guide on how to update drivers in Windows 11 if you need more help. You may also use driver updater software to fix this problem and avoid it in the future.

7. Backup data and consider replacing the drive

If the issue persists and your disk health is deteriorating, back up your important files immediately and consider replacing the drive. You can use dedicated backup tools to perform that process faster.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve ERROR_DISK_REPAIR_REDIRECTED (792 – 0x318) and restore normal system performance.
