Euro-Office Is Coming to Windows, Linux, and macOS With a New Desktop App

Euro-Office is getting a desktop app for Windows, Linux, and macOS, giving users a way to work with the open-source office suite outside the browser.

Nextcloud announced that it is bringing Euro-Office to the desktop as part of the wider Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer release. The desktop application will arrive in the coming weeks.

Euro-Office Desktop will support Windows, Linux, and macOS

Euro-Office Desktop will support Windows on AMD64 and Arm64, Linux on AMD64 and Arm64, as well as 64-bit macOS.

Until now, Euro-Office has mainly worked through the browser, including through its integration with Nextcloud Office. The new desktop app should give users a more traditional office-suite experience while keeping Nextcloud’s collaboration features.

Nextcloud says users will be able to work directly with files stored on their computers while maintaining a connection to their Nextcloud instance.

Euro-Office wants to become a European Microsoft Office alternative

Euro-Office is an open-source office suite developed by a coalition of European companies and organizations, including Nextcloud, Ionos, Open-Xchange, and Office.eu.

The project focuses on data sovereignty and reducing reliance on software providers outside Europe, positioning Euro-Office as an alternative to suites such as Microsoft Office.

Its launch has not gone smoothly, however. ONLYOFFICE suspended its Nextcloud partnership following Euro-Office’s debut, while Nextcloud and ONLYOFFICE also became involved in an AGPL licensing dispute.

The desktop app is coming in the next few weeks

Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer is available now, while the Euro-Office desktop application will launch separately in the coming weeks.

Euro-Office has also faced criticism from LibreOffice, which criticized the suite for prioritizing Microsoft file formats instead of open standards.

The upcoming desktop release will give Euro-Office users native apps across the three major desktop operating systems while keeping the suite connected to Nextcloud’s cloud infrastructure.
