Compal Electronics, a leading Taiwanese Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), has unveiled an innovative laptop concept called the “Infinite Laptop”. This concept features a display that expands horizontally to transform from a standard 14-inch screen into an ultra-wide 18-inch workspace. That’s a welcome change, as most similar products, mainly from Lenovo, expand vertically.
We don’t know yet if Windows 11 is ready for this new design, but generally, it shouldn’t be a problem, as widescreen displays are already the norm. Maybe the more important question is how the OS will deal with the animations and the resizing of the windows.
The Infinite Laptop screen expands both ways

This design takes advantage of rollable OLED technology, allowing the screen to extend outward from both the left and right sides of the base unit while keeping the central display area above the keyboard. The goal is to boost productivity by offering additional screen space without sacrificing portability.
The Infinite Laptop concept recently earned an iF Design Award 2025, recognizing its potential influence on future laptop designs. According to award documentation, the idea focuses on balancing portability and productivity, aligning with the evolving needs of modern users.
This concept might not hit the consumer market too soon
As an ODM, Compal primarily designs hardware for other brands rather than selling products under its name. While the Infinite Laptop introduces a compelling innovation, it remains uncertain whether this concept will make it to the commercial market. However, it reflects the industry’s growing interest in flexible and adaptable display technologies.
The shift toward expandable displays represents a fresh approach to laptop design, offering an alternative to the usual compromises in portable computing. Built-in expandable screens could reduce reliance on external peripherals while maintaining convenience and portability.
Compal’s Infinite Laptop concept is part of a broader push to explore new solutions that enhance user experiences in mobile computing. As technology evolves, concepts like this may pave the way for future devices that seamlessly combine flexibility with functionality.
