Helen Chiang has finally addressed the speculation surrounding her abrupt departure from Microsoft. The former Xbox Chief Operating Officer (COO) has rejected several claims about her exit, saying the story circulating publicly does not reflect her experience. Her statement also raises questions about how Microsoft handled the departure of a 21-year veteran.

Helen Chiang denies leaking information or joining a rival

In a LinkedIn post titled “Clarity is Kindness,” Chiang pushed back against reports suggesting she was fired for a policy violation. She said she would not provide a detailed account of events, but added that silence should not be mistaken for agreement.

Chiang specifically denied leaking confidential company information to the press. She also rejected speculation that she left Xbox to join a competitor, stressing that she had spent two decades building relationships, teams, and businesses at Microsoft.

She further denied engaging in discrimination, bullying, harassment, insider trading, embezzlement, or other fraudulent activity.

A sudden exit after just three months as Xbox COO

Chiang’s departure became public when Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced it in a brief internal memo. Chiang had been promoted to Xbox’s first Chief Operating Officer (COO) in July, giving her responsibility across content, hardware, platforms, and services. Her duties were temporarily distributed among other Xbox leaders.

Microsoft declined to discuss individual personnel matters, saying it appreciated Chiang’s years of service.

Chiang says the story is not over

Chiang also rejected suggestions that she left because she was overlooked for a bigger role. She said she had not actively pursued additional responsibilities and was promoted into her latest position in July.

Her closing remarks suggest she believes the situation deserves closer scrutiny. She said she has serious concerns about fairness and accountability, adding that this is not how she imagined her Microsoft story ending.

Will the company eventually provide more clarity about what happened? That’s only time will tell.
