Gemini Now Helps You Move Files Around in Google Drive

Google has quietly given Gemini a useful little upgrade inside Drive, and it’s actually kind of helpful. Starting July 7, Gemini can now move your files or create new ones just by typing simple commands.

This builds on the March update that first brought Gemini into the Drive sidebar. Back then, it could create folders and start new documents. Now, it handles basic file management too.

The idea’s simple: you highlight up to five files, open Gemini in the Drive sidebar, and type what you want. For example:

• “Move the @Q1 wrap up file in my Q1 forecast folder to the @Q2 forecast folder”
• “Create a new folder in My Drive called Q2 forecast”
• “Create a new presentation in the Q2 forecast folder”

Gemini understands commands like moving files to specific folders, creating folders, or spinning up new Docs, Sheets, and Slides, all in natural language.

You can only move five files at once for now, but it’s a small step toward less manual sorting. Google says the update will roll out over the next couple of weeks and is available to Workspace Business and Enterprise users, plus those with Gemini Education or AI Premium add-ons.

Meanwhile, Gemini’s also showing up more deeply in Docs and Gmail. Earlier this month, Google made it possible to use your custom AI “Gems” directly inside the side panel, no more hopping over to the Gemini website.
