GitHub Copilot Plugin Will End Support for Older JetBrains IDEs in the Next Few Months

Microsoft is preparing to end GitHub Copilot support for JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1.x. The change affects the entire 2025.1 release family, including later patches such as 2025.1.7, and will take effect in the coming months.

GitHub Copilot will leave JetBrains 2025.1 behind

Microsoft says it wants the Copilot plugin focus on newer JetBrains platform versions. Developers who remain on 2025.1.x will not suddenly lose Copilot when support ends, but future plugin updates may no longer work with their IDE.

Users on the affected version will also stop receiving bug fixes, performance improvements and new Copilot features for that IDE version. Microsoft has not announced the exact date when support will end.

The company says JetBrains 2025.2.x will become the minimum supported version once the change takes effect. However, Microsoft recommends moving to JetBrains 2026.1 or later instead.

Developers can check their installed IDE version by opening Help > About on Windows or Linux. On macOS, the version can be found under the IDE’s application menu and About section. Microsoft also recommends updating the GitHub Copilot plugin after upgrading the IDE. This can be done through Settings > Plugins, where users can check for available updates.

What happens if you stay on JetBrains 2025.1.x?

The important part is that this is a support change, not an immediate shutdown. Existing Copilot functionality is expected to keep working, but Microsoft will no longer provide the same level of compatibility and maintenance for the older JetBrains platform.

Microsoft says newer JetBrains versions give Copilot access to newer IDE APIs and tooling, allowing the team to add capabilities without maintaining older platform versions.

All that said, developers still using 2025.1.x therefore have a few months to move forward before support ends.
