Google Opens SynthID Detector Globally, With OpenAI and NVIDIA Joining the Deepfake Crackdown
In this age of AI, it’s hard to figure out whether that one photo or video you see on social media is AI-generated or real. Not to mention, AI is being used by people to streamline their day-to-day life and workflow, but Deepfake videos and photos are one of the major concerns. AI companies are well aware of it and have introduced technologies to spot AI content. One of them is Google, which has now opened SynthID Detector to everyone globally.
Google wants to make AI-generated content easier to spot
In 2023, Google first announced SynthID. It’s a technology that uses invisible watermarks that remain hidden from people but can be detected by Google’s verification systems. As of now, Google says it has watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos. It has also watermarked audio content equivalent to 240,000 years.
Interestingly, SynthID is no longer limited to Google’s own AI tools. The expanded detector also supports content from OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao. The company has also announced that Apple is expected to join the list soon. Eventually, this move will help users have one place to check media created across several major AI platforms.
SynthID Detector is now available to everyone
At launch, the company only offered SynthID to selected journalists and media professionals. Well, it’s now expanding access globally in English. Using SynthID is as simple as it can get. All you have to do is upload an image, video, or audio file to check for a SynthID watermark. However, Google makes it clear that SynthID is not a universal AI detector.
The tool can identify supported watermarks, but content without one doesn’t automatically mean it is human made. Google is also expanding its built-in verification tools. SynthID checks are already available through Search, Gemini, and Chrome.
Google says those services now handle more than one million verification requests every day. The company believes giving people more context can help them make better decisions about the media they encounter online. With OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and potentially Apple supporting the technology, Google is pusshing SynthID beyond its own ecosystem.
