Google Overhauls Gmail With Gemini In Its Biggest AI Update Yet

Google has announced the biggest AI updates for Gmail yet. The company is officially adding Gemini directly into your inbox as a proactive assistant. With over 3 billion daily users, Gmail is the world’s most used email service, and overflowing inboxes have made managing emails harder than ever. Google looks to change that with Gemini.

As part of the update, Gmail is getting AI Overviews. Like Google Search, Gemini can now summarize long email threads automatically, by summarizing replies into a quick snapshot of key points, decisions, and context. You can even ask their inbox questions using natural language, such as, “Who quoted me for the bathroom renovation last year?” In response, Gemini scans your emails and delivers direct answers.

Do note that AI Overviews are rolling out today for everyone, while the inbox Q&A is available for Google AI Pro and Ultra plan users. Besides AI summaries, AI writing tools also receive a major boost. Help Me Write is now available to all users, allowing you to get AI assistance for drafting and polishing emails.

Suggested Replies have been upgraded beyond Smart Replies, as the feature can now generate responses that match your tone and conversation context. Proofreading adds grammar, tone, and clarity checks, and is only available for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Next month, Help Me Write will add even deeper personalization by drawing context from other Google apps as well.

One of the biggest changes you’ll see this year in Gmail is AI Inbox. The feature, as Google says, will prioritize what actually matters to you: bills, reminders, and messages from frequent contacts. All of that will now be visible at the top, while the low-priority emails stay in the background. Google has made it clear that all analysis happens securely and privately.

Google adds that all these features are powered by Gemini 3 and start rolling out in the U.S. today in English, with more languages and regions coming soon.
