Grim Trials free copies claimed by Xbox players are now being revoked

Xbox has reportedly started revoking free copies of Grim Trials that were claimed before its official August 20 release. Players who managed to grab the $19.99 title at no cost are now receiving cancellation notices, with Microsoft stating the product “was not intended to be available.”

Here’s the message players received from Microsoft (via Neowin):

You recently placed a pre-order or purchase for Grim Trials. Unfortunately this product was not intended to be available, therefore we are cancelling your order, refunding any payment made, and removing it from your ”My games & apps” list. We apologize for the inconvenience. Visit account.microsoft.com to view your billing history.

One Reddit user expressed frustration over the removals, arguing that “that’s how digital works. Whatever they think they want, they can revoke it.” While some defended Microsoft’s decision, noting that the free listing appeared to be a developer build leaked from a hidden store entry, likely intended for remote testing rather than public access.

Despite the confusion, Grim Trials is now officially listed at its standard $19.99 price on the Xbox Store. Developed by Rolling Glory Jam and published by Soft Source, the game launched August 20 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, supporting Play Anywhere.
