GTA 6 Physical PS5 Copies in Japan Have an Expiring Download Code, Rockstar Confirms
GTA 6’s physical edition has become yet another topic of chatter over social media. Rockstar has confirmed that players buying the game physically in Japan won’t receive a traditional game disc.
Rather, they’ll get a download code that expires 170 days after launch. The restriction only applies to the Japanese release. Other regions haven’t received the same limitation.
Japan’s GTA 6 physical edition has an expiration date
An eagle-eyed fan spotted (post now removed) the limitation on Rockstar’s support page, where the studio has mentioned that the download code included inside the box expires 170 days after its issue date, which is November 19, 2026. Rockstar says the requirement exists because of regional regulations in Japan.
Speaking of other markets, Rockstar hasn’t announced similar expiration dates for physical editions sold outside Japan. Those versions still use the same disc-less “code-in-a-box” format, but without a stated redemption deadline.
That said, the restriction is unlikely to affect most buyers, as download codes are typically redeemed shortly after purchase. Players in Japan also benefit from a lower retail price of around $59, offering at least one advantage despite the unusual limitation.
