Planning to jump into Fortnite this morning? That will have to wait as Fortnite is down right now. Epic Games has officially pulled Fortnite offline as the studio begins rolling out the long-awaited v41.20 update, leaving millions of players unable to log in, queue for matches, or access any online game modes.

The maintenance window kicked off at 4:00 AM ET (8:00 AM UTC) on July 16, with matchmaking disabled roughly 30 minutes before the servers went offline. As expected, anyone attempting to launch the game during this period will likely run into login failures, matchmaking errors, or server connection messages instead of reaching the lobby.

Epic’s latest update is bringing fresh content to Chapter 7 Season 3 (Runners)

This isn’t an unexpected outage or a technical failure. Rather, Epic scheduled the downtime to prepare Fortnite for its v41.20 release, which introduces the Hot Bat Summer event alongside new DC-themed content for Chapter 7 Season 3.

While Epic hasn’t shared a full patch breakdown yet, the update is expected to include new cosmetics, gameplay additions, bug fixes, balance adjustments, and backend improvements that require servers to remain offline while deployment is completed.

That being said, the company has not announced exactly when maintenance will end. Downtime can vary depending on how smoothly the rollout goes, so servers could return sooner or remain unavailable for several more hours if additional testing is required.

What should you do if Fortnite still isn’t working?

Once Epic announces that servers are back online, Fortnite should begin working normally again. However, if you’re still experiencing crashes, login failures, matchmaking issues, or endless loading screens after maintenance concludes, the problem may be on your own device rather than Epic’s servers.

Speaking of that, common causes include corrupted game files, launcher problems, outdated graphics drivers, unstable internet connections, or firewall conflicts that prevent Fortnite from connecting properly. For step-by-step troubleshooting, check out our guide here.
