Modders have managed to run Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games on jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles, bringing popular Xbox exclusives such as Gears of War, Halo, and Forza to Sony’s hardware.

Recently, the PSBox app brought Xbox Cloud Gaming to jailbroken PS5 consoles, but modders are now going a step further by running Xbox games directly through emulators.

The development allows PS5 owners with modified consoles to play classic Xbox titles without relying on Microsoft’s cloud gaming service.

Xbox 360 and Original Xbox emulators are now running on PS5

Two community-developed emulators are making this possible: Xenia and XPSEmu.

Xenia, a popular Xbox 360 emulator originally developed for Windows, has now been ported to jailbroken PS5 consoles. Modders have demonstrated games such as Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 running through the emulator.

XPSEmu focuses on Original Xbox games, allowing modified PS5 consoles to run titles such as Halo 2 and Forza.

Both projects are still evolving, and game compatibility and performance can vary. Not every Xbox game will necessarily run correctly, and users may encounter graphical issues, crashes, or other limitations.

Xbox emulation itself is nothing new. Previously, an XeFu emulator was discovered inside Xbox backward compatibility games, highlighting Microsoft’s own approach to running older titles on newer hardware.

However, bringing Xbox emulation to PlayStation 5 is particularly interesting because it allows Sony’s console to run games originally exclusive to Microsoft’s platforms.

There’s a catch for PS5 owners

These emulators require a jailbroken PS5, meaning they won’t work on standard consoles running Sony’s official software.

Jailbreaking allows users to install unofficial applications and bypass certain restrictions, but it also introduces security risks and potential compatibility problems.

Neither Xenia nor XPSEmu represents an official Sony or Microsoft feature, and there’s no guarantee that all supported games will run smoothly.

The development also comes as Xbox faces difficulties in the console market. According to recent figures, Xbox sales crashed 33%, reaching a historic all-time low in the US.

While Xbox hardware sales are struggling, the modding community is finding new ways to bring Microsoft’s classic games to competing consoles.
