Latest SteamOS Update Fixes Slow WiFi and Improves Third-Party Handheld Support
If your SteamOS-powered handheld has been suffering from unusually slow WiFi despite having a fast internet connection, Valve may have just resolved it. The latest SteamOS 3.8.14 update fixes a networking bug affecting certain routers while also rolls out additional security improvements.
The update fixes issue with certain routers that show incorrect MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme) requirements. Under those conditions, SteamOS could limit wireless performance even when a faster connection was available. With version 3.8.14, Valve says that issue has now been addressed. The update also bundles the usual security patches and overall stability improvements, although the company hasn’t listed any additional stable-branch features.
That being said, this is actually the second SteamOS release in as many days. Valve previously rolled out SteamOS 3.8.13, which fixed controller firmware update failures affecting some Steam Deck models. The same update also resolved launch failures and crashes seen in a handful of games, including FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, making it another worthwhile download for stable users.
Speaking of upcoming additions, the company’s Beta and Preview channels are already moving ahead with SteamOS 3.8.21 and 3.8.22. Those builds introduce a faster Steam Machine splash screen during startup, add a one-click option to reset all audio settings, and eliminate a startup delay that could leave certain games hanging for up to 30 seconds on handhelds without active audio devices.
Not to forget, Valve also continues improving support for gaming handhelds beyond the Steam Deck. Recent beta updates fix Guide button issues on MSI Claw, restore proper gyroscope functionality on Lenovo Legion Go, improve rumble and controller behavior on OneXPlayer F1, and add controller support for additional OneXPlayer models.
