LG made a surprising move with their on-device AI for the Gram laptops. Normally, you would expect a company like LG to use popular AI. However, that’s not the case because there’s a catch. LG will use AI services developed by homegrown startups for their 2025 Gram laptops. In addition, they are collaborating with Intel and Microsoft to create an on-device AI challenge program.
How does the LG program work?
The LG project will support ten new startups financially and technologically. To join the program, fledgling Korean companies have to show their worth by creating innovative technologies in various domains for on-device AI. Additionally, the Minister of SMEs and Startups, Oh Young-joo, said that AI is similar to new industry discoveries like logical processors.
In addition, the Korean ministry will support projects like the LG one. After all, it will help small startups gain a leading role on the global scale. Furthermore, according to Jang Ik-hwan, executive vice president of LG Electronics’ corporate IT service business, LG will start helping startups discover innovative on-device AI technologies. Afterward, they will integrate them into the next-gen Gram laptops.
What is on-device AI?
On-device AI technology allows artificial intelligence applications to work without an internet connection. While the 2025 LG Gram laptops will have this tech, we might see it in other devices. For example, we could use it on phones when we travel for real-time translation. Also, think about your data privacy. The on-device AI doesn’t need to send your information to the internet. Additionally, in case of natural disasters, this technology could potentially save a lot of people by guiding them.
By the way, Jang Ik-hwan sees the on-device AI tech as an opportunity to advance in the U.S. service robot market. However, this market is new, and we might need to wait a while for new products.
In a nutshell, the LG 2025 Gram Laptops will use the on-device AI tech developed by startups. On top of this, the Korean ministry will support similar projects in the future, and LG will continue to aid small companies. Also, this tech is safer for our data and is handy because it doesn’t need access to an internet connection.
What are your thoughts? Will you get the 2025 LG Gram laptops for their on-device AI? Let us know in the comments.
