Linux Foundation Partners With New Group to Standardize AI Agents
We are living in the AI era, and there’s no denying it. But, as companies make their AI models more capable of different actions they can take, the Linux Foundation is stepping in to keep the ecosystem in check.
As reported by TechCrunch, the Linux Foundation has launched a new group, the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), which aims to create a neutral home for open-source projects that focus on allowing AI agents to communicate, connect, and work together without being locked into proprietary platforms.
The group has some big names in it. The first one is Anthropic, which has reportedly donated its MCP (Model Context Protocol). The said protocol links AI models to tools and data. Block, meanwhile, contributed with an open-source agent framework called Goose.
When it comes to AI, it’s not possible to have OpenAI in the scene, as the Altman-led company has added AGENTS.md. It is a simple instruction file that helps coding tools behave consistently. All three big names are building blocks for what the Linux Foundation calls the “agent era.” Let’s not forget that the AAIF members’ list also includes AWS, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, and Google for shared safety standards and interoperability.
Brad Axen from Block highlights that open frameworks like Goose can compete with proprietary systems at scale. Similarly, Anthropic hopes MCP becomes a neutral standard that connects models, tools, and applications globally.
Speaking with the news outlet, Jim Zemlin, Linux Foundation executive director, says that “By bringing these projects together under the AAIF, we are now able to coordinate interoperability, safety patterns, and best practices specifically for AI agents.” He further adds that the goal is to avoid “closed walls” and push towards real-world interoperability.
Are you excited about a future where AI agents from different platforms actually work together? How would open standards like MCP and Goose change your workflow?
