Meta isn’t thinking about AI as just another chatbot anymore. Mark Zuckerberg now believes the next big shift will be personal AI agents working for billions of people around the clock.

Speaking during Meta’s latest quarterly earnings call, Zuckerberg made one of the boldest predictions yet. He said it is “extremely unlikely” that people won’t have personal AI agents within the next five years.

“I think that it’s extremely unlikely… that you don’t have billions of people with a personal agent that understands your goals,” Zuckerberg said. He added the agent would be “working on your behalf 24/7” across the areas that matter most to you.

Zuckerberg says everyone will eventually have a personal AI agent

According to Zuckerberg, those assistants could eventually help users manage finances, health, household tasks, and even personal relationships. He also believes messaging apps will become the center of that experience, pointing to WhatsApp as Meta’s leading platform for AI conversations today.

That said, this isn’t a completely new direction for Meta. Just days ago, the company introduced new agentic capabilities inside Meta AI, allowing it to plan tasks, connect with apps, and complete actions on behalf of users.

Despite spending heavily to make it happen, Zuckerberg remains convinced the investment will pay off. “We believe that there will continue to be a significantly higher margin on selling intelligence rather than selling compute directly,” he said during the earnings call. “But we think that there’s a big opportunity… to sell compute as well.”

The company is racing alongside OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic to build increasingly capable AI assistants. Meta’s strategy, however, centers on making those agents personal rather than focusing only on work or coding. Whether billions of people embrace AI agents remains to be seen. One thing is becoming clear, though. Meta is building its next decade around that idea.
