Meta is reportedly facing growing internal backlash after introducing a new employee monitoring initiative tied to its broader AI ambitions under CEO Mark Zuckerberg, as Neowin writes. The program allegedly tracks worker activity on company laptops to help train Meta’s AI systems on how humans perform computer-based tasks.

The initiative reportedly forms part of Meta’s push toward what Zuckerberg has described as “personal superintelligence,” as the company continues restructuring heavily around generative AI development.

Meta’s Monitoring System Tracks Workplace Activity

The program is reportedly called the Model Capability Initiative, or MCI. According to internal discussions, the system monitors employee typing activity, mouse movements, and on-screen content while workers use corporate devices.

The collected data allegedly helps Meta train AI models capable of understanding and replicating real-world computer workflows and task execution.

Apps reportedly monitored include Gmail, Google Chat, Visual Studio Code, and Meta’s internal AI assistant known as Metamate.

The initiative appears designed to improve AI agents capable of navigating software interfaces and completing multi-step digital tasks with minimal human input.

Employees Reportedly Call Program a Privacy Violation

The initiative has reportedly triggered criticism from some employees, with workers allegedly describing the monitoring system as invasive and raising concerns about workplace surveillance.

Some employees reportedly asked whether the tracking could be disabled on corporate devices. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth allegedly responded that there would be no opt-out option available on company laptops.

Meta reportedly told employees that safeguards exist for sensitive content and that the collected information would only be used for AI training purposes.

Despite those assurances, the initiative has reportedly intensified broader internal concerns surrounding employee privacy and automation.

AI Restructuring Fuels Internal Tension

The backlash reportedly comes during a period of major restructuring inside Meta as the company shifts resources toward generative AI development.

Employee morale has reportedly declined amid layoffs, internal restructuring, and growing fears surrounding automation. Workers discussing the issue on anonymous forum Blind allegedly claimed company leadership now prioritizes AI initiatives above employee concerns.

Some workers reportedly fear they are effectively helping train systems that could eventually replace portions of the workforce.

Reports suggest Meta may cut around 8,000 employees, representing roughly 10% of its workforce. At the same time, the company continues aggressively recruiting top AI researchers and engineers.

Meta Continues Massive AI Spending Push

Meta’s AI expansion reportedly includes enormous compensation offers for elite AI talent, with some reports claiming packages reaching as high as $300 million.

The company is also reportedly exploring large-scale infrastructure investments, including space-based solar systems intended to help power future AI datacenters.

The situation highlights growing tension across the tech industry between rapid AI acceleration, workforce stability, employee privacy, and corporate surveillance concerns.

As Meta pushes deeper into generative AI, internal resistance may continue growing alongside concerns about how far companies should go in collecting employee behavioral data to train future AI systems.
