Meta May Unveil Camera-Free Luna Smart Glasses at Connect Conference Next Week

Meta, which unveiled the One Subscription yesterday, seems ready for major change to its smart-glasses strategy. According to The Information, the company is planning a new pair of camera-free smart glasses, internally codenamed Luna, that could be unveiled at Meta Connect next week.

Meta Luna could focus entirely on AI and audio

The reported glasses would drop the camera found on Meta’s existing Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Instead, Luna is expected to use six built-in microphones so users can interact with Meta AI and the company’s newer Muse consumer AI agent through voice commands.

Luna will reportedly retain speakers that direct sound toward the user’s ears, along with a physical button on the side for quickly activating Meta AI. The removal of the camera could also allow Meta to make the temple arms slimmer, giving the glasses a more conventional appearance.

The Information reports that Meta could show Luna during its September 23-24 Connect conference, with shipments targeted for October. Two styles are reportedly planned, called Clubmaster and Burbank. Meta has not publicly confirmed Luna, its specifications or the reported launch schedule.

In recent past, Meta’s camera-equipped smart glasses have faced growing privacy scrutiny. The glasses include an LED intended to signal when the camera is recording, but some users have reportedly found ways to tamper with that indicator. Meta recently introduced software changes intended to stop recording when the LED is blocked.

Camera-free glasses could give Meta a new angle

Luna could therefore offer Meta a way to keep its hands-free AI experience while removing the feature causing the biggest privacy concerns. That being said, microphones still raise their own questions about how people will feel wearing AI-powered glasses in public.
