Microsoft 365 Apps to Stop Getting New Features on Windows 10 in 2026
Yet another tactic to push users towards Windows 11
If you’re still using Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10, you’ll want to mark your calendar. Starting in 2026, Microsoft will be cutting off new features for Office apps like Word and Excel on the aging OS.
As spotted by The Verge, Microsoft quietly confirmed this change in a support document. While the company had already committed to keeping security updates going until October 2028, this marks the beginning of a feature freeze aimed at nudging users away from Windows 10.
It’s worth noting that the feature updates will stop at different times, depending on your update channel. Users on the Current Channel, including most home subscribers, will stop getting new features in August 2026.
Enterprise users on the Monthly Enterprise Channel follow in October, while those on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel will see the tap shut off by January 2027.
After these dates, all new development will be halted. Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 will be locked to Version 2608, with only security patches continuing. Microsoft is still keeping things safe, but making it clear that new tools and features will live only on Windows 11.
