Microsoft has been pushing Copilot for years, positioning Copilot+ PCs as the next generation of computing. However, many users now push back against aggressive AI integration, rising hardware costs, and concerns around the misuse of AI-generated content.

Microsoft plans AI watermarks in Copilot for Microsoft 365

According to the Microsoft Roadmap, Microsoft plans to introduce AI-generated content watermarking in Copilot for Microsoft 365. The goal focuses on limiting misuse and clearly identifying AI-created media.

The roadmap notes that Copilot will apply watermarks to AI-generated images, audio, and video. Microsoft continues development, but current information points to a rollout starting in February, with availability across desktop and mobile platforms.

Microsoft’s approach mirrors existing solutions from Google, which already uses SynthID. This system embeds invisible digital watermarks into AI-generated content, allowing platforms and investigators to trace its origin without affecting visual or audio quality.

While Microsoft has not detailed its technical implementation, the roadmap suggests a similar invisible watermarking approach rather than visible labels.

The watermarking move arrives as Copilot faces ongoing criticism. Users have raised concerns about Copilot’s ability to access personal files, and the tool has appeared in recent controversies involving UK police usage.

Although watermarking could reduce misuse and misinformation, it may not fully address broader trust issues surrounding AI integration and data access. As Microsoft expands Copilot across Windows and Microsoft 365, user skepticism around AI governance and transparency continues to grow.
