Microsoft 365 Family and Premium Users Can Now Share Copilot AI

Microsoft is expanding Copilot AI benefits for Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers, allowing them to share AI features with up to five additional family members.

Previously, only the subscription owner could access Copilot, even though other benefits, including Office apps, were available to family members. With this change, family members will no longer need separate subscriptions to use the included AI features.

Subscription owners will also gain controls to manage AI access for younger family members.

Microsoft introduces a shared AI usage allowance

Alongside expanded access, Microsoft is replacing separate Copilot feature limits and monthly AI credits with a single shared AI usage allowance.

Instead of individual limits for features such as Chat, Deep Reasoning, and AI tools across Microsoft 365 and Windows apps, subscribers will use one allowance across supported Microsoft AI products and services.

Microsoft 365 Family and Premium members will draw from the same shared allowance, while Premium and Pro subscribers will have the option to purchase additional AI usage when necessary.

However, Microsoft has not revealed how much AI usage each subscription will include or how different Copilot features will consume the allowance.

The company has also not announced pricing for additional AI usage, leaving questions about how quickly families might exhaust their shared allocation.

Microsoft’s official support documentation still describes the previous AI usage policy.

The changes come alongside other subscription updates, including Microsoft’s decision to reduce OneDrive storage for Family and Premium plans from 6TB to 2TB.

Microsoft is also retiring Targeted Release for Microsoft 365 in 2027. Separately, the company has warned administrators to update certificates to avoid losing access to Windows Updates in 2027.
