Microsoft and OpenAI Clarify Their Partnership as Amazon Invests

OpenAI has officially announced a massive new $110 billion funding round that values the artificial intelligence company at $730 billion. As part of this latest financial push, Amazon has stepped up with a $50 billion investment of its own. This major move means OpenAI is no longer relying exclusively on Microsoft’s Azure platform for its cloud infrastructure needs.

To make sure everyone understands where their relationship currently stands, Microsoft and OpenAI released a joint statement confirming that their core agreements remain intact despite Amazon’s new level of involvement.

The financial and technical boundaries

What this really means is that the commercial revenue-sharing arrangement between Microsoft and OpenAI is not going anywhere. If OpenAI generates new revenue through its partnership with Amazon Web Services, a portion of that money will still flow back to Microsoft.

Microsoft also retains its exclusive license to access the intellectual property across OpenAI’s models and products. Azure remains the sole cloud provider for stateless OpenAI API calls. Even if a brand-new product built by Amazon and OpenAI needs to make a stateless call to an OpenAI model, that specific request will still be processed through Microsoft’s Azure servers.

OpenAI will continue hosting its own first-party products, including its new Frontier enterprise platform, directly on Azure. However, Microsoft will not have the ability to sell Frontier to outside developers. Amazon has secured the exclusive third-party distribution rights for that specific platform.

A new multi-cloud strategy

With Amazon entering the picture, OpenAI is adopting a much broader approach to its infrastructure. AWS and OpenAI are teaming up to build a Stateful Runtime Environment powered by OpenAI’s models, accessible through Amazon Bedrock.

OpenAI is also preparing to utilize AWS Trainium chips to run several of its AI workloads. The two companies even plan to develop specialized models explicitly designed for Amazon’s consumer products, like Alexa.

The partnership is clearly shifting. By pulling in major investments from companies like Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank, OpenAI is establishing a multi-cloud future while keeping its foundational ties to Microsoft firmly in place.
