Microsoft expands Foundry AI lineup with general availability of Claude Sonnet 5
Claude Sonnet 5 comes as Anthropic’s newest Sonnet-class model and succeeds Sonnet 4.6. Microsoft says the upgraded model is designed for production workloads, particularly coding, AI agents, workflow automation, document creation, and professional knowledge tasks. Developers can access it directly through Microsoft Foundry while continuing to use existing Azure authentication, networking, governance, billing, and security controls.
For teams, Microsoft says Sonnet 5 is built to handle large codebases, multi-file development, debugging, refactoring, and complex implementation work with fewer correction cycles. The company also highlights stronger reliability for AI agents, allowing them to better manage tool calls, maintain context across multiple steps, recover from errors, and complete longer workflows with higher accuracy.
Outside software development, Microsoft says the model can also assist with spreadsheet analysis, report creation, document drafting, presentations, financial reviews, and research tasks. The company notes that Sonnet 5 performs incremental reasoning and verifies its own work, helping improve accuracy in enterprise scenarios where precision matters.
In case you are wondering about pricing, Anthropic is running a promotional $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026. After that, pricing will move to $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Microsoft says Claude Sonnet 5 is available immediately through Microsoft Foundry for developers and enterprise customers building production AI solutions.
