Microsoft Changes Modern Standby Audio Behavior in Windows 11
Audio now only plays during automatic screen-off
Microsoft recently introduced more changes tied to Modern Standby, and one of them affects how audio works during sleep mode on Windows 11.
Users running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 noticed that music and other audio no longer continue playing after manually putting a laptop into sleep mode. If you close the lid, press the power button, or choose Sleep from the Start menu, Windows now stops audio playback completely.
Microsoft says this behavior is intentional and tied to Modern Standby functionality.
Windows 11 Changes Audio Behavior During Manual Sleep
Older Windows laptops could often continue playing music even after the lid closed. Many users used this feature for streaming audio to Bluetooth speakers or listening to music while the laptop remained closed.
That behavior no longer works in newer Windows 11 builds.
Once the system enters standby through a manual action, audio playback stops immediately. Playback resumes automatically after the PC wakes up again.
The change affects both internal laptop speakers and Bluetooth audio devices.
Microsoft Says This Is Expected Behavior
Microsoft updated its documentation to clarify that audio playback is not supported when standby starts manually.
According to the company, the restriction applies when users intentionally trigger sleep by closing the lid, pressing the power button, or selecting Sleep from the Start menu. The limitation also applies on both battery power and AC power.
Audio Can Still Work During Automatic Screen-Off
The restriction only affects explicit standby actions.
If Windows automatically turns the screen off after inactivity, audio playback can still continue in the background. In that situation, the device remains active enough to keep music or other audio streams running.
The difference comes from how Windows enters standby. Automatic idle screen-off still allows playback, while manual sleep mode now disables it.
Microsoft May Be Focusing on Battery Life and Reliability
The change appears connected to Microsoft’s broader Modern Standby improvements in Windows 11.
Modern Standby has received criticism over battery drain, overheating, and laptops unexpectedly waking while inside bags or sleeves. By limiting background activity during manual standby, Microsoft may be trying to improve battery life and overall reliability.
Microsoft recently released additional Experimental and Beta builds for Windows Insiders as it continues testing more Windows 11 changes.
Possible Workaround Still Exists
Users who still want music playback after closing the lid can change the laptop lid behavior in Windows power settings.
Setting the laptop to “Do nothing” when the lid closes allows music playback to continue normally, although it may increase battery usage while the device stays active.
In other news, the company has also released new Experimental and Beta builds to Windows Insiders, bringing additional platform changes and early testing features for upcoming Windows updates.
