Microsoft Clipchamp, the Redmond-based tech giant’s native video editor, does not work in Firefox. While this isn’t exactly news, considering it has been known for a while, and Microsoft acknowledged it, it seems that the topic has gained renewed interest lately thanks to a Reddit post, where users, unsurprisingly, would love Microsoft Clipchamp on Firefox.
Some tickets to Mozilla have been open for more than two years, with Clipchamp users asking the company to support the video editing tool in the Firefox browser.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has published a blog post explaining why Firefox doesn’t support Clipchamp. Apparently, the video editor tool pushes browser tech to the limits, and some, like the Chromium-based Edge and Chrome, are managing it, while others, such as Firefox and Safari, don’t.
Our service pushes web browsers to their limits by using many newer technologies. Different browsers support these technologies to a varying degree, sometimes not at all. This is why Clipchamp doesn’t work in some browsers such as Safari and Firefox.
Unfortunately, we also tried to open Clipchamp in Firefox to no avail. You can access the site, but when you click the Try for Free button, it will take you to a page that says the video editor is not supported on this browser.
Ironically, it advises users to download Chrome or Edge if they want to use the web version of Microsoft Clipchamp.
The Redmond-based tech giant advises users to open Clipchamp in Edge or Chrome. However, many people are using Firefox. The browser has a modest 6.64% market share, but according to the latest stats, it’s the fourth most used browser in the world.
And it’s 2024: Web services such as Clipchamp should be available to all browsers. This would benefit users and Microsoft, too.
Some users have unofficial ways to get Clipchamp to work on Firefox, with one Redditor saying that you can get it to work if you change the user agent on Firefox. Changing the user agent on Firefox is possible, but it’s not accessible for regular people. If you want to give it a try, though, you can follow our extensive guide.
