Workaround available while Microsoft investigates

Microsoft has acknowledged a new bug affecting Quick Steps in classic Outlook for Microsoft 365. The issue impacts Version 2512 (Build 19530.20138), where some Quick Steps suddenly appear grayed out and become unavailable.

According to Microsoft, the problem happens when Outlook determines certain Quick Step actions “can’t be fulfilled.” Reports indicate the bug commonly affects actions such as clearing message flags and removing categories from emails.

Quick Steps is one of the long-standing productivity features in classic Outlook. It allows users to automate repetitive email tasks such as moving messages, forwarding emails, marking mail as read, assigning categories, and creating custom workflows with keyboard shortcuts.

Outlook Users Reportedly Complained for Months

Microsoft says the Outlook team is currently investigating the issue, though users reportedly complained about the behavior for months before the company formally acknowledged it.

For now, Microsoft shared several temporary workarounds. One option involves assigning keyboard shortcuts directly to affected Quick Steps through the “Manage Quick Steps” menu and the Shortcut key dropdown.

Another workaround involves rolling back Outlook to Version 2511 (Build 19426.20218). Microsoft also suggested temporarily switching to Outlook on the web or the new Outlook app until a permanent fix arrives.

To roll back Outlook, Microsoft recommends running the following command:

officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.19426.20218

The company additionally advised users to disable Office auto-updates temporarily, otherwise the problematic build may reinstall automatically.

In other Outlook-related developments, Microsoft recently confirmed the shutdown of Outlook Lite and retired the Contact Masking feature. Separately, security researchers also linked the new TCLBanker Trojan to campaigns spreading through Outlook and WhatsApp.
