Microsoft Confirms Whiteboard Retirement Timeline, Legacy Content Will Be Deleted

Microsoft has confirmed that its transition to OneDrive-backed Microsoft Whiteboards is entering its final stage. Enterprise customers must move any remaining legacy whiteboards before August 22, 2026, which is when Microsoft’s migration tool will be retired.

Legacy Whiteboards have an expiration date

After that aforementioned date, organizations will no longer have a way to transfer old whiteboards into the newer OneDrive-backed experience. Microsoft is urging administrators to verify migrations now instead of waiting until the deadline.

That said, after September 5, 2026. Microsoft says every legacy whiteboard that hasn’t been migrated or exported will be permanently deleted, with no recovery option available afterward.

The standalone app is also going away

The retirement extends beyond old whiteboards. Microsoft also confirmed that the standalone Microsoft Whiteboard app for desktop and mobile will reach the end of support on September 14, 2026. Going forward, enterprise users will access Microsoft Whiteboard directly through Microsoft Teams, replacing the standalone application.

The changes also affect personal Microsoft accounts. Starting August 22, those users will no longer be able to create or edit whiteboards. Anyone wanting to keep existing content should export it before the September deletion deadline.

Microsoft recommends migrating legacy whiteboards, confirming the migration completed successfully, updating internal documentation, and informing affected users before the retirement dates arrive. Once legacy whiteboards are deleted, Microsoft says they cannot be restored or migrated under any circumstances.
