Microsoft Edge to Add Opt-In Autolaunch Startup Control for Managed Windows Devices This November

Earlier this year, Microsoft tested Edge auto-launch by default on Windows 11 PC. Not to mention, users were quite frustrated about it. However, at the time, we also learned that there is a way to turn off that behavior. Now, the company is working on offering better control for users on managed devices over whether the Edge browser launches automatically when Windows starts. The new experience is supposed to make Edge startup behavior more flexible without removing administrator control.

Edge startup behavior gets a new opt-in option

Under the upcoming change, users on managed devices will be able to choose whether Microsoft Edge launches automatically during Windows startup. This gives users a direct choice instead of having startup behavior determined entirely by the existing device configuration.

Administrators will also get control through a new LaunchEdgeOnWindowsStartupEnabled policy. Microsoft says the policy will support opt-in, opt-out, and user-choice configurations, giving organizations different ways to handle Edge’s startup behavior across managed devices.

Well, that could be handy for organizations where some employees need Edge available immediately while others may prefer to launch the browser manually. Administrators can decide how much control to give users instead of applying one startup setting across every device.

Microsoft currently lists the rollout to kick off in November 2026, with General Availability planned. That said, Microsoft hasn’t indicated that the feature will alter startup behavior automatically for every managed device.

However, the combination of administrator policies and user choice appears designed to provide more flexibility around when Edge launches. For businesses managing large numbers of Windows PCs, that could make it easier to balance centralized policies with individual preferences.
