Microsoft Extends App-V Server Support Until October 2029
Microsoft has extended support for Application Virtualization (App-V) Server until October 9, 2029, giving organizations more time to migrate away from the legacy application virtualization technology.
According to Microsoft 365 Message Center notification MC1509128, the company has extended the product’s lifecycle under its Fixed Lifecycle Policy, reversing its earlier plan to end support in April 2026.
App-V Server allows organizations to stream Win32 applications to computers without installing them locally, making it useful for businesses managing applications across multiple devices.
App-V Server will continue receiving security updates
Under the revised lifecycle, Microsoft will continue providing necessary security updates for App-V Server until October 9, 2029.
However, the extension does not mean Microsoft is resuming active development. App-V Server will not receive new features or functionality improvements.
The new deadline applies only to App-V Server. App-V Client and Sequencer will continue following the support lifecycle of their respective Windows versions.
Microsoft recommends Azure Virtual Desktop and MSIX
Despite extending support, Microsoft still recommends that organizations move away from App-V Server.
The company identifies Azure Virtual Desktop App Attach as a long-term replacement and encourages organizations to adopt MSIX, its modern application packaging format.
The additional support period gives IT administrators more time to assess their existing deployments, test alternatives, and complete migrations without immediately losing security updates.
The decision comes as Microsoft continues retiring older Windows technologies and changing support policies. The company recently ended security updates for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 and ended support for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions.
Microsoft also announced that it will block ReFS volumes on USB drives starting January 2027.
For organizations still relying on App-V Server, the October 2029 deadline provides additional time to transition, but Microsoft continues to recommend modern alternatives.
