Microsoft brings high-power AI infrastructure online with efficient cooling

A massive AI facility in Wisconsin
The new facility is located in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin and is expected to become one of the most powerful AI datacenters in the world. Microsoft designed Fairwater to support next-generation artificial intelligence workloads at an unprecedented scale.
The datacenter runs on hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 GPUs, built on Blackwell architecture. These chips connect into a single, unified cluster, enabling significantly faster data processing and model training.
Microsoft claims the system can deliver up to ten times the performance of today’s top supercomputers.
Built for scale, efficiency, and sustainability
Fairwater introduces a fully liquid-cooled, closed-loop system that does not require additional water once construction is complete. This design comes as Microsoft faces ongoing scrutiny over datacenter water usage, making the approach a notable shift toward more sustainable infrastructure.
The facility also adds roughly 2 gigawatts of AI capacity, comparable to the output of two nuclear power plants. Microsoft says the datacenter relies on renewable energy sources, including a 250-megawatt solar project in Portage County.
To address concerns about local impact, the company stated it is pre-investing in energy infrastructure. This approach aims to prevent increased electricity costs for nearby communities while maintaining environmental protections.
Powering next-generation AI workloads
Microsoft built Fairwater to handle advanced AI training and support agentic AI systems. These workloads require massive compute power and highly efficient data processing pipelines, which the new infrastructure is designed to deliver.
The launch aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand its AI footprint globally. The company plans to replicate similar facilities across more than 70 regions, adding to its existing network of over 100 data centers.
