Microsoft Gives Admins Until 2027 to Move Teams to Its New Domain

Teams on the web is moving to a new domain, with Microsoft replacing teams.microsoft.com with teams.cloud.microsoft as part of its wider Microsoft 365 domain migration.

Microsoft detailed the change in Message Center advisory MC1465764. The company says the move only changes the Teams web address and will not affect the service’s functionality.

Teams links and bookmarks will continue working

Microsoft plans to automatically redirect users who visit teams.microsoft.com to the new teams.cloud.microsoft address.

Existing bookmarks will continue working, so users will not need to manually replace saved Teams links. Microsoft also says existing Teams artifacts that use the old domain will remain supported.

The company does not expect the domain migration to break existing Teams functionality or integrations.

Microsoft has been moving its Microsoft 365 services to the cloud.microsoft domain to create a more consistent domain structure across its products.

Teams will move to the new domain by the end of September

Microsoft has already started rolling out the domain change gradually and expects to complete the migration by the end of September 2026.

The company will monitor the rollout for potential compatibility issues while more organizations switch to the new domain.

For most Teams users, the only noticeable difference should be the URL shown in the browser address bar. Users who access Teams through existing bookmarks or links should automatically reach the new address.

Admins can temporarily stop the Teams redirect

Microsoft is giving IT administrators a temporary option to disable the redirect if the new domain causes compatibility problems.

Organizations can continue using the existing teams.microsoft.com domain while administrators investigate issues with applications, integrations, or network configurations.

Microsoft intends this option only as a temporary troubleshooting measure. Administrators can disable redirects until the end of 2026, but Microsoft expects all customers to use the new Teams domain in 2027.

IT admins should allow teams.cloud.microsoft

Administrators should verify that their network configurations and Teams integrations support teams.cloud.microsoft before the migration reaches their organization.

In particular, companies may need to allow the new domain through firewalls, secure web gateways, proxies, and other network controls. Admins should also test applications or integrations that rely on the existing Teams web address.

Most end users should not need to take any action.

Microsoft has several other Teams changes underway. The company recently released a workaround for Teams not launching on ARM64 devices following a Windows 11 update.

Microsoft is also removing the Admin app from Teams and Outlook. Separately, Teams users will soon get an option to temporarily silence all notifications for a selected period.
