Microsoft Graph PowerShell v3 Will Drop Windows PowerShell 5.x Support

Microsoft has announced a 12-month retirement period for Windows PowerShell 5.x support in Microsoft Graph PowerShell modules, as it shifts active development and maintenance to PowerShell 7.x and later.

Existing Microsoft Graph PowerShell v2.x modules will continue working with Windows PowerShell 5.1 during the transition. Microsoft says the change affects maintenance rather than immediate compatibility, meaning existing scripts should continue to run.

PowerShell 5.x-specific bugs will no longer be fixed

As the retirement progresses, Microsoft will focus new features, bug fixes, testing, and engineering work on PowerShell 7.x and later.

Issues that specifically affect Windows PowerShell 5.x will no longer receive active investigation or fixes. Microsoft will, however, continue providing required security fixes for Microsoft Graph PowerShell v2.x modules during the roughly 12-month retirement period.

Organizations that continue using Windows PowerShell 5.1 may therefore see scripts remain functional while platform-specific bugs go unresolved.

Microsoft Graph PowerShell v3 arrives in Q4 2026

Microsoft plans to release Microsoft Graph PowerShell v3.0.0 in Q4 2026.

After v3 becomes available, Microsoft does not plan to publish additional v2 releases unless security fixes require them.

Microsoft Graph PowerShell v3.x will support PowerShell 7.x and later, while Windows PowerShell 5.x will no longer receive explicit support.

The change effectively makes PowerShell 7.x the platform administrators will need for future Microsoft Graph PowerShell development and updates.

Admins should begin migrating to PowerShell 7.x

Microsoft recommends that organizations still running Microsoft Graph automation through Windows PowerShell 5.1 start planning their migration to PowerShell 7.x.

The approximately 12-month transition gives administrators time to test existing scripts, update automation workflows, and address compatibility issues before Microsoft ends maintenance for Windows PowerShell 5.x.

PowerShell 7.x will become the only actively maintained and recommended platform for Microsoft Graph PowerShell going forward.

In other news, Microsoft gives admins seven days before Edge 154 drops WIP and MDAG, while Defender admins could lose App Governance access unless they change roles.

Microsoft is also preparing another enterprise change, as it will remove Power Query as a Python data source in Excel for the web.
