Microsoft has officially announced support for passkey In a significant update to the Windows 11 operating system. The feature enables users to log in to websites and applications without traditional usernames and passwords. Instead, passkeys rely on device PINs or biometric information, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, to streamline the authentication process.

Although passkey management was introduced to the Windows Insider program in June 2023, its general availability is a milestone achievement. As per David Weston, Vice President of Enterprise and OS Security at Microsoft, “Passkeys are the cross-platform future of secure sign-in management. They create unique and unguessable cryptographic credentials, securely stored on your device.”

Initially introduced in May 2022, passkeys were designed to replace conventional passwords, offering a stronger and more resistant defense against phishing attempts.

Passkey Benefits

Passkeys offer numerous benefits over traditional passwords. Firstly, they are unique to each website or application, enhancing security. Furthermore, it eliminates the need to set up complex passwords and the hassle of remembering them.

Additionally, they can be seamlessly synced across devices within the same operating system or ecosystem, simplifying the sign-in process. Passkeys on Windows 11 will be compatible with several web browsers, such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, and other supported options.

To create and manage passkeys on Windows 11, users can navigate to Start > Settings > Accounts > Passkeys. This centralized location allows easy access and control over the passkeys associated with different websites and apps.
