Microsoft Is Dropping Edge Manifest V2 Support for Enterprises in 2027

Microsoft Edge Manifest V2 support for enterprises will begin disappearing in January 2027, with Microsoft expecting the transition to finish by late April 2027.

Microsoft has published new guidance for IT admins ahead of the change through Microsoft 365 Admin Center message MC1467356.

The company has already started phasing out Manifest V2 extensions, but managed enterprise environments have received additional time to prepare.

Microsoft Edge will block Manifest V2 extensions

Edge will gradually make Manifest V2 extensions harder to use as Microsoft moves toward Manifest V3.

Users will first see deprecation warnings for affected extensions on the Manage Extensions page and in the Edge Add-ons store. Manifest V2 extensions will also disappear from Add-ons search results.

Microsoft will eventually prevent users from installing Manifest V2 extensions. Once the transition finishes, extensions that still rely on Manifest V2 will stop working in Edge.

Managed devices get temporary Manifest V2 support

Organizations can temporarily continue using Manifest V2 extensions through the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy.

However, Microsoft plans to remove that policy as the enterprise deprecation process moves forward.

Organizations using ExtensionInstallForcelist or ExtensionInstallAllowlist will also need to review their configurations and prepare them for Manifest V3 extensions.

Admins should audit their Edge extensions

Microsoft recommends that IT administrators identify which Manifest V2 extensions remain deployed across their organizations.

Admins can use Edge management reporting or the Edge management service to find affected extensions and determine whether Manifest V3 replacements already exist in the Edge Add-ons store.

Organizations that rely on internally developed extensions will need to migrate them to Manifest V3 and resubmit them through Partner Center.

Admins will also need to update extension deployment policies so they reference the new Manifest V3 versions.

Developers need to move extensions to Manifest V3

Microsoft will stop accepting regular updates for existing Manifest V2 extensions as it continues the phaseout.

The company is encouraging developers to migrate their extensions to Manifest V3 instead of continuing to maintain Manifest V2 versions.

Manifest V3 introduces stricter permission controls and prevents extensions from using remotely hosted code.

According to Microsoft, these changes reduce the attack surface while improving extension security and performance.

Enterprise Manifest V2 support ends in April 2027

Enterprise customers still have several months to review and migrate their extensions before Microsoft begins the enterprise deprecation process in January 2027.

The temporary support period is expected to end by late April 2027, after which organizations will need to rely on Manifest V3 extensions.
