Microsoft is opening another door for indie developers, and this time it’s about gaming’s fastest-growing engines. The company has officially released a new XBOX-focused Godot sample project, which developers a clearer path to bring their games to XBOX on PC. For studios already using the open-source engine, the announcement removes a major chunk of the guesswork that often comes with platform integration.

XBOX wants Godot developers on board

Godot has steadily gained popularity over the last few years, especially among indie creators looking for a lightweight alternative to larger commercial engines. Now Microsoft appears ready to meet those developers where they already work.

The newly released sample project serves as a public reference for integrating Microsoft’s Game Development Kit (GDK), XBOX services, and PlayFab directly into Godot projects. Rather than building everything from scratch, developers can use Microsoft’s implementation as a starting point for their own games.

Sign-in, multiplayer, and cloud features included

Developers get examples covering Xbox account sign-in, controller support through GameInput, PlayFab integration, multiplayer systems, matchmaking, lobbies, game saves, and other platform-level services. The sample is also compatible with Microsoft’s April 2026 GDK release, which allows developers to start experimenting immediately.

It seems Microsoft is interested in making XBOX services available wherever developers choose to build games. Godot has become one of the most requested engines in that regard, especially among smaller studios.

That being said, there are some limitations to keep in mind. The current sample is designed specifically for XBOX on PC and does not support XBOX Series X, XBOX Series S, or XBOX One development. Microsoft has also confirmed that this is a source-only sample, not a product. Additionally, there is no set update cadence for support or maintenance, and it is the first step in bringing Godot for XBOX on PC.
