Microsoft Pauses KB5002907 Rollout After It Breaks Office Installations

Microsoft has paused the rollout of KB5002907 after the optional Office update caused licensing and installation problems for some users.

The issue affects Office 2016, Office 2019, and Office 2021 products. In some cases, the update invalidated legitimate Office licenses. More seriously, some users found their Office applications removed after installing it.

KB5002907 can leave PCs without working Office apps

Microsoft confirmed that the repair action included with KB5002907 caused some devices to end up without functioning Microsoft 365 Apps or Office installations.

The company has now stopped distributing the update while it investigates the unexpected behavior. Since KB5002907 was optional, users who did not install it should not encounter the problem.

Microsoft has not released a corrected version of KB5002907 or said when it plans to resume the rollout.

Affected users may need to reactivate or reinstall Office

Users who installed KB5002907 and lost access to their Office licenses should reactivate Office.

However, users whose Office applications disappeared may need to manually reinstall them. That makes the issue more disruptive than a typical activation problem, particularly on systems where the update removed the Office installation entirely.

Microsoft has not provided an automatic recovery method for affected installations at this point.

In other news, Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5127216 and KB5125758 for Setup and Recovery, while Office 2021 support ends in October.

Microsoft has also released a fix for the broken copy and paste issue in Excel.
